Chapter 32

Emilia was going to bring Vegas to Highport. Hannah had said yes, she should trust the dog and go with him to chase down the “rascal,” which Emilia had thought was a surprisingly mild term for Hannah to choose to describe Jefferson. But first, Emilia was to calm down. More. Because rage wasn’t good for the baby. Then she’d sleep on it. Then go to Highport in the morning if it still seemed like a good idea.

The plan, twenty minutes later, seemed full of holes. However, Emilia did feel calmer. She’d followed Hannah’s advice to calm down by doing what she did best – cleaning and organizing. She figured Jefferson had hired her to whip his home into shape, and so she would, whether or not Jefferson himself was merely a rascal or something worse.

Now that she was calm, and two of Jefferson’s closets were tidy and organized, going to Highport seemed like a bad idea. She had called Jefferson twice and there was no answer.

Why go just because the dog had brought her the brochure? It was unlikely the dog was correct. It was unlikely Vegas could communicate something like that. And even if Jefferson had run away to Highport, he’d run away. Emilia wasn’t exactly an expert in the male psyche, but she knew enough to realize that she shouldn’t chase the man. Maybe in the movies, a woman left with the secret hope that the man would come after her, and there would be a dramatic moment when he’d run through the airport to catch her before his chance was gone, but this wasn’t that situation. Jefferson had fled, rather than have a simple conversation about the child growing inside her.

She’d just decided not to go to Highport when Jefferson’s doorbell rang.

She wondered whether or not to answer it, but then Vegas trotted to the door, sat in front of it, and looked at her like he was waiting for her to open it. The dog seemed calm. Maybe he smelled whoever was at the door. Maybe it was someone familiar to the dog.

Emilia opened the door and on the other side was a man who looked a lot like Jefferson. He was, perhaps, just a bit taller and a bit more… glowering. He definitely looked like he was in a bad mood.

“I’m Emilia,” she said quickly. “I’m Jefferson’s professional organizer.”

The man gave her a once-over. “Well god knows he’s needs it. I’m Joe,” he said. “Jeff’s my brother.”

“He’s not here right now,” Emilia said.

“I know.” Joe stepped inside and looked down at Vegas. “I’m here for the dog. This must be Vegas.” The dog nudged Joe’s leg and Joe scratched his head.

“You haven’t met Vegas yet?” Emilia asked.

“No. Just found out about him a few minutes ago,” Joe gave Vegas’s head a final pat and walked toward the kitchen. “I’m going to grab his food and take him to my place while Jeff is gone.”

So someone knew where Jefferson had gone.

“Did he… did he tell you I would be here?” she asked, as she followed Joe to the kitchen.
